Welcome to St John’s!
We are a COMMUNITY of faith that strives to be both inclusive and engaging. We are a theologically diverse, thoughtful, and grounded group of people. We don’t require everyone to think the same way. We encourage people to ask questions, and share their perspectives on life & faith, for in listening to one another our lives are enriched and our world expands.
All are WELCOME here, regardless of gender, theology, colour, or sexual orientation. We honour and respect religious traditions that are different to our own. We believe God is love and that we have been given this good news to celebrate and share with all people. We seek to practice the radical welcome and hospitality Jesus himself offered to those he met, particularly to those people on the fringes of society.
We are INSPIRED by the way of compassion & justice made known to us in the person of Jesus Christ. We believe that in Him we have seen God. We exist to share the hope He brings us all with the world today. This requires of us to be intentional about our faith; to be able to reflect & talk to others about the hope that is within us, to be involved in initiatives that alleviate the suffering of the poor and marginalized, to care for the environment and the whole of creation, and to remind all people of their inherent value & worth.
We are DEDICATED to being transformed by the Spirit of God. Through the liturgical seasons we are given the space to reflect thoughtfully on our humanity and our spirituality, to make powerful changes in our world and for our lives. We are on a journey of exploration and continuous growth as we celebrate our faith which is grounded in the sacrament of Baptism, sustained through the sacrament of Holy Communion, & restored through the sacrament of Confession and Absolution.
We HONOUR the Bible as an unfolding of Divine wisdom & truth. We are indebted to Richard Hooker (1554-1600), who gave Anglicanism the gift of leaning not just solely on Scripture for discerning the truth, but to employ also human reason and tradition on the quest as well. It’s interesting to note this way of reading the Bible is not new. The Early Church employed this equation often. This is why the truth the Bible points to is never threatened by new discoveries in science, technology, or biology, because even in the pages of the Bible itself, and in the lives of those who have read it throughout the centuries, we find the nature of humanity’s understanding of God to be constantly expanding, evolving and changing.
We INVITE you to come and journey with us as we celebrate the mystery that is God. Whoever you are, and wherever you are on your journey, we welcome you here among us. Think of the church as a place for you to come to stretch your understanding, to work off any excess burdens that are weighing you down, and to allow the spirit of this community to shape your life in a transformative way through a program of intentional prayer, hospitality, and worship.
Whoever you are, and wherever you are on your journey, we welcome you…..
